The Mai Tai was invented in 1944 by Victor J. “Trader Vic” Bergeron, in his tiki restaurant in California. Using Jamaican rum as his base, he combined it with lime and added a subtle hint of almond. Upon tasting this new drink, two of his friends exclaimed “mai tai,” a Tahitian expression meaning “the best of them all.”
