Montreal, December 6, 2013 – For the second quarter of its 2013–2014 fiscal year, which ended on September 14, the SAQ recorded sales of $664.5 million, an increase of $12 million or 1.8% compared with the corresponding quarter of the preceding year. The SAQ also posted net earnings of $238.3 million for the same 12-week period, up $2.8 million or 1.2% from the same quarter in fiscal 2012–2013.


Sales up in stores

The store and specialized centre network stood out with sales of $600.8 million, a 3.2% increase from the previous fiscal year’s $582.3 million. The network’s volume sales totalled 36.4 million litres, a rise of 1.4%. In contrast, sales in the wholesale grocer network fell $6.5 million or 9.3% to $63.7 million. For their part, the network’s volume sales were down 0.8 million litres or 9.2%, ending the quarter at 7.9 million litres. At the same time, these results are consistent with the slowdown in sales in the food sector during the same period.


Sales by category

·      Red wines remain in the lead with a 62% market share, compared with 29% for white wines and 9% for rosé wines, which were especially popular with consumers during the summer period.

·      At 5 million litres, sales of spirits, which are sold only in the store and specialized centre network, remained stable compared with the preceding fiscal year.

·      Sales of coolers declined by 0.2 million litres to end the second quarter at 2.8 million litres.

·      The imported beers, ciders and related products category held steady at 0.9 million litres sold.


Expenditures remain stable

Compared with the same quarter in fiscal 2012–2013, net expenses were stable in the second quarter at $115.5 million. Expressed as a percentage of sales, they amounted to 17.4% for the second period of fiscal 2013–2014, as opposed to 17.7% for the corresponding quarter of the preceding fiscal year.
