Shafer Merlot 2012
After working in publishing for 23 years, John Shafer and his family established his wine business in the Napa Valley where they settled in 1972. At his Stags Leap vineyard, he prefers growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot among other varieties. Trained at the venerable UC Davis, his son Doug joined the team in 1983 as head winemaker. The following year, Elias Fernandez came to work at the winery and he continues to polish these incomparable wines to perfection today.
«The 2012 Merlot jumps from the glass with brilliant red cherries, plums, flowers, spices and mint. With time in the glass, the flavors blossom beautifully as the wine gains texture and resonance. Merlot still suffers from a less than stellar reputation in some circles, which is unfortunate. Few do it better than Shafer when it comes to capturing the fruit-driven exuberance of Merlot. Drink this juicy, resonant red over the next few years.»
