Club Balattou: the birthplace of world music in montreal
Founded by Guinean Lamine Touré in 1985 on Saint-Laurent Blvd. in Montreal, Club Balattou was born out of a desire to create a haven for African, Caribbean and Latin American communities so they could share their beats and traditions. The name means “ball for all” and reflects the intent to bring cultures and rhythms together in a friendly, enriching place where everyone is welcome. From the very beginning, the club attracted musicians of the highest calibre who are renowned internationally but unknown here, and quickly cultivated a dedicated audience from a variety of backgrounds. A genuine hub for world music in North America, Balattou is also behind the Festival International Nuits d’Afrique, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
While the venue is known for music, its cocktails have also become big hits. Everyone’s favourite has always been the “Volcan”, a mix of homemade ginger juice and rum that’s prepared by the same person who’s been whipping it up for 40 years. Many people visit Balattou just for this delicious drink!
Montreal’s world music Hub: the iconic Club Balattou
Over time, Balattou established itself as a mythic destination for big names in the industry, music lovers from all over and young artists hoping to launch their career on the continent. Thanks to the sense of belonging in these communities, some 20 songs have been written about the club and played in countries around the world. The recipe for success at Balattou remains unchanged—it’s about taking the audience on an incredible journey that highlights a unique blend of cultures.
This is also reflected in the art of mixology, particularly in an original recipe that has stood the test of time and will make you feel like you’re somewhere else entirely. The famed Ti Punch, made with lime, rum and cane syrup, is a popular, refreshing beverage that will transport your taste buds to the Caribbean.

The Nuits d’Afrique music festival will be marking its 40th birthday in July. Every year, the event condenses the previous 12 months at Balattou—it’s a celebration of everything audiences discovered there. "This year’s edition will be held at the club and will take over the Quartier des spectacles and several other venues throughout the city. While returning to where it all began, the festival will highlight the contributions of artists who have left their mark on the local, national, and international scene over the last four decades.
It will also be an opportunity to pay tribute to the stars who have passed or cannot be there, thank the public, and share Mr. Touré’s legacy with younger generations. The cocktail chosen to honour the happenings is the Caribbean, a festive and fruity classic made with rum and blackcurrant syrup that’s always a crowd-pleaser and will continue to be a mainstay on the club’s menu for years to come. Long live Balattou and Nuits d’Afrique!
