3 unbeatable sugar shacks to savour
These three quintessential sugar shacks have their own alcohol licenses, so you can leave your bottles at home for another occasion; they’re your favourite places to sucrer le bec in sweet, sweet gourmet style, as soon as spring arrives!
Cabane à sucre Au Pied de Cochon
Without a doubt, we knew that Cabane à sucre au Pied de cochon would top our polls; Chef Martin Picard certainly doesn’t go anywhere unnoticed! This sugar shack is in a league of its own, and is as much an adventure for your taste buds…. as it is for your stomach!
This address comes with a caveat, however—those seeking a seat at Chef Picard’s tables need to be patient and reserve well ahead of time. The 2018 spring season is already sold out, which is usually the case by the end of the holidays. You can always console yourself with Télé-Québec’s “Un Chef à la Cabane” series (in French only) until next time!

Thirsty at the cabane?
The benefit of heading to a bring-your-own-bottle sugar shack is being able to open up a bottle of your favourite wine or spirit, while also saving a bit of money at this occasionally pricey outing. Here are some suggestions for perfect beer, wine, and cider pairings that will match the delicious and varied menus you’ll find at sugar shacks!
Beer
Who doesn’t love a great beer? For your maple adventure, pick a dark beer with caramel accents. L’Amoszus Double is a great choice, because of its notes of caramel, banana bread, and sweet spices.
White wines
Ah white wine, so delicious! Opt for wines with the “Aromatic and Mellow” or “Fruity and Sweet” taste tag to help wash down your favourite sugar shack dishes.
Rosés wines
Rosé, whose colour matches the springtime itself! Opt for a bottle with the “Fruity and Sweet” taste tag, like this semi-dry, which possesses good liveliness. It’ll be the perfect pairing for your sweet maple table.
Ciders
Are you forever dreaming of bubbles? A sparkling cider from the Domaine Lafrance, is a fabulous choice. The latter has a hint of ice cider, and is a wonderful match for the sweetest of dishes offered by sugar shacks.
Red wines
Red wine aficionados should direct their taste buds to bottles with “Fruity and Medium-Bodied” or “Aromatic and Supple” taste tags. These wines’ round, vanilla profiles will make all that your sugar shack offers taste even more delightful!
Have a happy (and sweet!) sugar shack season!
