Rioja DOCa wines

A century
of passion

Marked by its diverse climates, terroirs, altitudes, and grape varieties, Rioja is a winemaker’s dream. This year, it celebrates 100 years of recognized quality and ranks among the top five most prestigious wine regions in the world. And it’s only the beginning.

Rioja favourites for every taste

100 years young

Rioja’s enviable location and ideal conditions have been used for centuries to craft beautiful wines. But it was in 1925, thanks to a royal decree, that the region was officially recognized and protected, with defined boundaries. This marked the birth of the Rioja DO (Denominación de Origen). A regulatory council was created in 1926 to ensure compliance with these new standards.

A century of firsts

DO and DOCa – Why it matters

These designations regulate wine production within a specific region. By defining the production area and setting strict standards, they help ensure consistent quality. For consumers, it’s a reliable seal of excellence. Rioja leads the way in Spain for its commitment to quality, consistency, and authenticity.

Quality and consistency

Rioja’s rise to global prestige is thanks to the DOCa Council’s rigorous standards. Year after year, it ensures quality control and protects the region through cutting-edge technology and dedicated professionals at every stage of production.

Cheers to the next 100 years

With deep winemaking roots, Rioja is firmly focused on the future—investing in innovation and environmental stewardship. Sustainability is central to its strategy, with initiatives like a Sustainable Development Expert Committee, an Operational Group for landscape and vineyard protection and the development of single-vineyard wines.

Rioja also boasts the largest concentration of century-old vines in Spain—and possibly the world. A dedicated plan is in place to protect these historic vineyards.

Let’s eat!

Celebrated, crowned, and devoured—Spanish cuisine is bursting with flavour and sunshine. Its diversity makes it a perfect match for Rioja wines. Follow the rule “what grows together, goes together,” or pair Spanish wines with local favourites.
