  1. " There is very good Chablis typicity to the overtly floral nose that offers up notes of mineral reduction, white peach and sea breeze that are trimmed in moderate wood nuances. The sleek, intense and delicious larger-scaled flavors that possess fine underlying tension, all wrapped in a succulent, palate coating, dry, refined and powerful finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. 2. ‘’ In almost every vintage, it's worth the price difference to step up to Voge's Vieilles Vignes bottling. Certainly, the 2016 Cornas Vieilles Vignes is another huge success, with hints of cracked pepper and briars accenting red plums and then picking up licorice on the long, softly dusty finish. Full-bodied, concentrated and supple, it's approachable now yet looks sure to evolve gracefully for at least a decade. ‘’

  3. ‘’ Dark violet. Intensely perfumed aromas of dark fruit preserves, baking spices and potpourri are accompanied by smoky mineral and olive notes that build with air. Densely packed and seamless in the mouth, offering spice-tinged black and blue fruit flavors and violet pastille and candied licorice nuances. Smooth, even tannins build slowly on the impressively persistent finish, which features a resonating suggestion of exotic spices. ‘’

  4. ‘’ The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a complex bouquet that is slightly more Musigny in personality than I expected. There is mainly dark fruit here, mixed with potpourri and incense and becoming more flamboyant as it aerates in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and quite compact in style because, as François Millet noted, these 2017s are beginning to close down. But there is certainly good density here, and an enticing tensile finish. ‘’

  5. ‘’ The 2017 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is complex and well defined on the nose, where touches of iodine and wild heather infuse the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly grainy texture; notes of black truffle and fresh fig complement a fruit profile that welcomes more red fruit toward the finish. Hints of white pepper and sage linger on the aftertaste. This is certainly beginning to close up in bottle, so allow a decade if you can for this Musigny to show what it is capable of. ‘’

  6. ‘’ Here too there is a discreet but still discernible dollop of wood surrounding the airy citrus, oyster shell and sea breeze-scented nose. The racy, intense and intensely mineral-driven flavors possess excellent delineation in the context of the vintage before concluding in a powerful yet refined, focused and strikingly long finish. This too is really quite impressive. ‘’

  7. ‘’ Jean-Louis Chave had done some preblending of the 2017 Hermitage at the time of my visit, meaning several parcels had already been combined with others, so there were fewer components to taste. A sample that included some L'Ermite, Les Beaumes and Péléat was fragrant, loaded with peppery spice and came across as slightly open-knit (93 - 95). A second component, mostly Le Méal, was richer and riper-tasting, with lush fruit and hints of roasted meat (97 - 99). Finally, a sample Jean-Louis described as "more the core of the blend" (mainly Les Bessards) was simultaneously firm and generous, with notes of crushed stone, cassis and licorice. ‘’

  8. ‘’  A very pretty nose evidences plenty of floral character with a cool essence of red currant, cherry and soft wood nuances. There is good volume and punch to the attractively textured flavors that possess a rounded mouthfeel while offering solid depth and persistence where a touch of austerity arises. This is a quality Morey villages. ‘’

89 Coup de cœur, outstanding (Burghound)

  9. ‘’ In the end, I'm unable to definitely say that the 2017 Hermitage Blanc is better than the stupendous 2016. Of course, I sampled it just three days after it was bottled, so I've appended the + to my rating, as there's a possibility the wine may have been affected by that process. It's gently toasty but dominated at this stage by forward melon and pineapple fruit. Full-bodied and incredibly rich yet balanced, it unfolds in waves of flavor and texture, lingering for what seems like minutes on the finish. Hit it soon to enjoy its youthful opulence, or put it aside for 10-12 years. ‘’

  10. ‘’ Delicately mentholated, with hints of nettle, white pepper, it’s naturally restrained. The power revealed by its texture, with an almost tannic aspect, will take time to reveal itself. Very crystalline, it offers a bright and sapid finish. A great white meant for cellaring. ‘’

18 (La Revue du vin de France)

  11. ‘’ This is the first wine to display any appreciable reduction and it's enough to overshadow the underlying fruit at present. There is excellent size, weight and mid-palate density to the overtly powerful big-bodied flavors that culminate in a dry, saline and solidly persistent finish. As is usually the case this is caressing and seductive yet entirely serious while offering fine aging potential. ‘’

  12. ‘’ Just a wonderfully fun, joyous expression of the appellation, Chave's 2017 Saint Joseph was set to be bottled the day after my visit. It blends lots from Chalaix, Dardouille, Les Oliviers, Bachasson, and Le Clos Florentin into a medium to full-bodied wine loaded with cherries and delicate herbal nuances. Silky and crisp on the finish, it can be enjoyed now and anytime over the next 5-6 years. ‘’

  13. ‘’ The latest manifestation of new cuvée chez Joblot that debuted a few years ago is the 2018 Givry 1er Cru L'Empreinte, a blend of fruit from premiers crus Servoisine, Cellier Aux Moines, Marole and Bois Chevaux. The wine has turned out beautifully, wafting from the glass with an inviting nose of cherries, crushed cassis and plums mingled with hints of smoked meats and spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with an elegant chassis of powdery tannins, lively acids and a long finish. With better oak integration at this early stage than the Joblot wines of yesterday, it's seamless and harmonious. ‘’

  14. ‘’ Aromas of rich dark fruits, spices and baking chocolate introduce the 2018 Givry 1er Cru Servoisine, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and gourmand wine that's ample and nicely concentrated, with an elegant chassis of powdery tannin. From a celebrated clay-rich climat, it's a promising wine. ‘’

90-93 Coup de cœur, sweet spot, outstanding (Burghound), 91-93 (Wine Advocate)

  15. ‘’ The 2018 Givry 1er Cru Clos Du Cellier Aux Moines bursts with notes of spicy cherries and blackberries, followed by a medium to full-bodied palate that's broader, more concentrated and more powerful than the supple Servoisine, with a lavish core of dark, sappy fruit. There's more active calcium in the soil here and less clay. ‘’
