Château Smith Haut Lafitte cru classé de Graves 2013
Detailed info
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) complemented by Merlot (34%) and Cabernet Franc (5%) and a touch of Petit Verdot (1%). A balanced wine with charm and complexity.
As the name suggests, Château Smith Haut Lafitte formerly belonged to a British man named George Smith, who held the property in the 18th century. The estate, located in Martillac, passed to merchant Louis Eschenauer in 1958, and was subsequently sold in 1990 to the husband and wife team of Florence and Daniel Cathiard, who fell under the estate's spell. They wasted no time applying their philosophy, harvesting the grapes by hand and gradually doing away with herbicides to produce their own organic compost. The estate is not organically certified, but efforts are underway to become so. With the help of gifted oenologists Michel Rolland and Stéphane Derenoncourt, the Cathiards have put their name to some of the finest Pessac-Léognan wines.
