    Cellar potential: 2025-2045

"Full-bodied, generous and silky on the palate, as well as pure, precise and refined, this is a highly energetic Rothenberg and surely the best I have ever tasted from this spectacular terroir. The finish is mouthwatering, fresh and salty and celebrates purity and tension in wine. This is power without weight and finesse without charm. Finishing without ending. This 2019 Rothenberg from ungrafted vines is a challenge—a crime if you miss it!"

  2. WA 95
    Cellar potential: 2022-2060

"The nose is pure, fresh and intense, with concentrated fruit and floral and stony aromas that represent a late harvest of highly ripe but healthy grapes. This leads to a round and lush, in fact Spätlese-styled palate with enormously generous fruit that is immediately lifted by this beautiful mineral acidity and freshness. This is a beautiful Riesling from the Weinviertel north of Vienna. The finish is intense, aromatic, juicy and enormously stimulating. This Riesling drinks dangerously well today, but it should be glorious in 5 to 10 years."

  3. WA 95
    Cellar potential: 2022-2050

"The golden-colored wine opens with a perfectly ripe, intense and concentrated bouquet of fully ripe and healthy fruits with notes of crushed hazelnuts, walnuts, stones and herbs. Rich and almost oily but refined and very elegant on the palate, this is an enormously supple, dense and structured but also refined and vital "best of" Veltliner with persistent mineral acidity and a long and aromatic finish."

  4. JS 98

"This comes very close to realizing my dream of grüner veltliner! An entire microcosm of herbal, peppery and sweet vegetal (think snow peas) aromas, then a stunning mouth feel on the concentrated palate that’s at once creamy yet invigorating with a ton of mineral freshness pushing the finish out in the direction of infinity."

  5. WA 92
    Cellar potential: 2022-2026

"It's a bit reductive from the recent bottling some three months before I tasted it, and the wine needs a little bit of time in bottle or in a decanter if you open it soon. They have lowered the skin contact; it's mostly direct pressing and just a small part of whole berries."

  6. WA 94, JS 92
    Cellar potential: 2022-2035

"Deftly handling the wood, this focuses more on its fine depth and power, its ability to take over the palate. It seems to balance everything well and wash over the tongue. Serious and deep, rich without being overly fruity, this looks like a winner that can evolve more. That's a question it certainly has to answer in the cellar, but it seems splendid right now."

  7. WA 96, JS 97

"This is as complex and savory as the rest of the Viña Tondonia wines, but also shows a tad more depth, with a hint of black plum and blue fruit on top of the orange rind, iron, tobacco and earthy spices. Expect some cedar and truffle to develop in the future. Juicy, zesty and tight, with a dusty tannins and bright berry fruit on the medium-to full-bodied palate."

  8. WA 93
    Cellar potential: 2023-2037

"This doesn't seem so powerful or dense at first, but then the wine expands in the glass, takes over the palate as well and the power kicks in—it becomes rather intense. The blue fruits are still there as is the touch of vanilla from the new wood, but this disjointed and powerful Touriga needs some time to come around. It looks like a big winner and a terrific value, but you are going to have to be a little patient."

  9. WA 90+, WS 91, JS 93

"Attractive aromas of lavender, blueberries, raspberries, strawberry pie, cinnamon and caramel. It’s medium-to full-bodied with fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Balanced and supple with a polished, sweet-fruited and lengthy finish."

"The 2018 Barolo Cerretta offers good focus with a sharp and linear style that gives way to forest berry, wild rose, rusty nail and crushed stone. The wine is extremely direct, and that's what sets it apart. In that sense, this wine is faithful to the characteristics of Serralunga d'Alba. The soils of Cerretta see a layer of white marl on the surface and red clay further down; that's where those rusty sensations must come from."

  11. WS 95, JS 96

"Pretty, floral nose, also offering mushroomy sous-bois notes that give this a real nebbiolo feel from the outset. Full-bodied with firm, fine tannins that are very polished and anchor the wine nicely. Love the focus here. This will need lots of time to evolve and meld together."

  12. WS 97

"The aromas alone—macerated cherry, plum, menthol, leather, licorice, black pepper and mineral—are worth the price of admission here. Slowly beginning to unfold, this red is still firm and less expressive on the palate, with the addition of oak spice notes. Nevertheless, this is complex, long and sophisticated, with a great future ahead. Best from 2024 through 2047."

  13. This mythical estate is one of the greatest ambassadors of Piedmont wines, possibly even of Italy. Today helped by his three children, Angelo Gaja continues to craft deep, elegant and balanced wines that surely make up the elite of Italian wine. Born from vines bought by the Gaja from the Gromis family in 1995 set on two of the best Barolo crus, this cuvee is all about finesse and imposing backbone. Licorice, pot-pourri and cherry make up the now close mouth, but showing undeniable potential of at least 12 years.
  14. V 95, JS 96

"The fresh and just ripe strawberry aromas really come through here, together with some licorice and floral highlights. Medium to full body with fine, focused tannins that are vertical and bring your palate down through the wine. A solid and beautiful wine for the vintage."

"The 2018 Barolo Sperss is a gorgeous, gorgeous wine. The aromatics alone are beguiling. Then again, that’s one of the things that makes Barolo such a totally seductive wine. Sweet black cherry, lavender, spice and leather give this unusually translucent Barolo striking layers of dimension. Potent Serralunga tannins are present, but they are beautifully woven into the wine’s fabric."

"The 2017 Barolo Monprivato is elegant, classy and nuanced. Crushed red berry fruits, spice and blood orange lend and exotic flair to this silky, mid-weight Barolo. The 2017 loses some of its persistence with air, but offers tons of immediacy and sheer allure. Best of all, the 2017 will drink well with minimal cellaring. This is one of the better recent vintages of Monprivato the Mascarello family has released."

"The 2018 Barolo Conca is tight and beautifully intense with cassis, sour cherry, wild rose and blue lilac. The wine's inner fiber is fine and delicate, with slight aromas of spice, licorice and toast at the edges. Barolo Conca awards a lot of fine elegance and a long, polished finish."

"From a historic vineyard site in La Morra, the Renato Ratti 2017 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata shows nicely balanced results in this vintage and is my favorite of this three Barolo release. The wine is redolent of dried cherry, cassis, crushed rose and dusty earth. To the palate, it is very fine and almost fragile, although the tannins are dry and loosely textured. We see this in Ratti's Barolos from Conca and Marcenasco as well."

"The 2018 Barbaresco Roncaglie Masseria is made as if it were a Barolo (instead of a Barbaresco) and is released one year after its peers. It shows tart fruit and dried cranberry with some mild spice and tarry smoke from two years in large oak casks."

"Vietti has the enormous advantage of 10 MGA sites at its disposition for blending purposes (and for making single-vineyard wines). This allows them to select the fruit they want to best express any one vintage. The 2018 Barolo Castiglione draws upon those 10 sites (including the recent additions of Mosconi, Ginestra, Bricco Ravera and Briccolina) to make what is ultimately its best-selling wine. This classic rendition is tonic and clean with varietal tones of wild berry, rose and rusty nail."

"Vietti is one of a handful of estates to bring the Ravera MGA of Novello to the current popularity it enjoys now. Their 2018 Barolo Ravera has a smoky personality with crushed stone and pencil shavings. There is plenty of dark fruit at the back, ripe cherry and blackberry mostly, and the wine is tonic and firm in terms of its structure and tannins. The Ravera is a wine of enormous length and a finely tuned texture."

"With fruit from La Morra, the mid-weight 2018 Barolo Brunate shows a pretty softness and a delicate side with dried rose, lilac and blue flower. The wine completes malolactic fermentation in barrique and is later moved into large oak casks for aging. This dual oak treatment is part of Vietti's secret recipe for producing the silky tannins and fine texture you taste here. The wine is recognized by that distinctive aromatic finale of licorice and balsam herb."

"The 2018 Barolo Lazzarito represents Vietti's interpretation of Serralunga d'Alba, the village often associated with the most powerful wines in the appellation. The Lazzarito completes its secondary fermentation in barrique over three months and is then racked into large oak botti for an additional two years of aging. With some 8,000 bottles produced in this smaller vintage, the wine is very indicative of its geographic origins with tight black fruit, rusty nail, blood orange and earth. Compared to the others in this series, this wine delivers more lasting tannic power. A bit salty and savory now, it is well suited to long aging."

"Here's an exciting new submission from Vietti. The 2018 Barolo Cerequio is lovely, sporting a broad and enriched bouquet that paints a panoramic vision of this MGA that straddles the villages of La Morra and Barolo. Despite that wide vision, this wine also excels at showing pinpoint details of wild cherry, crushed stone and black licorice. Cerequio is a wine of latitude and depth. Tight tannins help to stitch it together into a comprehensive whole. Only 4,925 bottles were made in this inaugural release. Congratulations."

"Here's a very special treat from Verduno and one of the most exciting new releases we will see from Italy this year. In its inaugural release, the Vietti 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is made with 60% whole cluster fruit, following in time-honored local tradition. The soils of Monvigliero are loose and light in color, producing tight but lean-bodied wines. The use of whole clusters gives the wine more texture, intensity and tannins. With wild berry, rose, dried mint and white licorice and very fine and smooth tannins, this wine is part of a precious 3,207-bottle production."

"This is one of my sweetheart wines from Castiglione Falletto. The Vietti 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is beautifully etched and sharp with an especially delineated quality that is uncommon in this vintage. Fruit comes from a small 8,000-square-meter parcel, and like the other wines in this cru series from Vietti, it ages in oak casks for two years. The wine's texture is beautifully smooth and polished thanks to the carefully integrated tannins."

"This is one of three single-vineyard (and organic) expressions of Nero d'Avola from Gulfi and another such release of 6,400 bottles. The 2017 Nero Bufaleffj offers medium-dark concentration and lots of aromatic intensity that closely reflects the varietal purity of this wine. Black cherry and dried blackberry segue to spice, scorched earth and roasted eggplant. This was a hot vintage, but the wine's fruit definition remains crisp and linear nonetheless. Nero Bufaleffj is born on a three-hectare site with a unique mix of black clay, white limestone and reddish sandy soils. These unique conditions shape this wine's special identity."

"The 2017 Nero Sanloré is the dusty, spicy and elegant beauty of the Gulfi Nero d'Avola range. The bouquet presents a beguiling mix of crushed stone, roses, incense and tart cherries. It's soft and almost weightless in feel, hovering across the palate with a refined display of red berries and inner florals. A subtle coating of tannin lingers, but does not get in the way as this finishes with sweet minerals and hints of tangerine. Give the Sanloré a year or two to come further into focus and flesh out a bit more. From the Gulfi crus, this is the vineyard closest to the sea, less than 700 meters away, and at only 10-15 meters above sea level, with vines growing in sandy soils. It is simply stunning."

"The Altesino 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is ripe and round with lots of pretty textural richness and juicy fruit flavors. These qualities tie in nicely with the character of the vintage that saw long and hot summer days. Dark fruit, plum and blackcurrant pave the way for savory spice, tobacco and limestone. The effect is soothing and rich, and the wine remains perfumed and silky to the end. The tannins are well managed in this hot-vintage wine."

"The Caparzo 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna La Casa offers more intensity and depth next to the annata expressions (also tasted in this report). It's not much, but there is enough of a difference to justify the special single-vineyard selection. Wild fruit, licorice and balsam herb add vertical lift to the bouquet. The magical sharpness and brightness of this wine is linked to the soils of Vigna La Casa, which are blanketed with shards of galestro schist. These soils mitigate the warm growing season."

"The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Ama San Lorenzo is a fabulous choice for readers looking for an Ama wine to drink now. Radiant and expressive, with striking depth and exceptionnal balance, the 2017 is pure seduction. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, rose petal, blood orange and spice fill out the layers effortlessly. This is so beautifully done."

"A blend of mostly Sangiovese with Cabernet Franc and Merlot in supporting roles, the Castello di Ama 2018 Haiku is a very interesting and somewhat unexpected expression that delivers big richness and lovely concentration, yet the fruit is never too ripe. In fact, it might be a tad underripe in this vintage that saw a few cooler weeks in early summer and some rain toward the end of the growing season. In all, it shows careful balance with an elegant, medium-bodied approach that is propped up by fresh and lively fruit. There are some Cabernet Franc-driven aromas of black olive tapenade. Like the other wines in this portfolio, Haiku is distinctively Mediterranean in personality."

"The Le Ragnaie 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is a delicate and graceful expression that unfolds carefully to reveal wild berry, dried lilac and pretty earthy tones. This 26,000-bottle release fits into that enviable school of Brunello that prioritizes tradition, elegance and purity. These are the basic traits of a great Sangiovese, but they are not easily achieved by all. Le Ragnaie's identity is deeply linked with these efforts. Lifted notes of dried mint or Mediterranean herb appear on the close."

"The V. V. stands for old vines. With fruit from 50-year-old plants, the Le Ragnaie 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V. V. is one of three black-label special selections made by this estate. Instead of a Riserva program, Le Ragnaie focuses on territorial identity and single-vineyard expressions. This pretty wine shows the distinctive concentration that comes from the old vines, but that is also a result of the hot growing season. Dark fruit, rose, spice and baked clay emerge from this medium to full-bodied Brunello."
