Mulled wine
- 750 ml (1 bottle) red wine
- 60 ml (2 oz.) blackcurrant liqueur (optional)
- 120 g (4 oz.) sugar (brown sugar, honey or maple syrup)
- 1 orange, sliced
- 2 cloves
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 2 star anise
- 1 pinch of nutmeg
- 1 slice of fresh ginger
Heat the wine and sugar on medium-high heat until the sugar is completely dissolved.
When the mixture is about to come to a boil, lower the heat.*
Add the cinnamon and other spices and the liqueur.
Let the mixture infuse on low heat for 20 minutes.
Remove from heat.
Strain using a fine sieve.
Serve the drink hot in "toddy" glasses.
Decorate with an orange slice, a cinnamon stick and a star of anise.
* Although mulled wine is easy to prepare, it is important not to let the mixture boil. This will ensure the drink remains fresh-tasting and not too bitter.
