The SAQ is fully involved in the transition now under way

Modernization of Quebec’s deposit-return system

The SAQ Dépôt in Terrebonne is one of seven pilot projects announced today

Montreal, August 17, 2021 – As announced this morning by the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Benoît Charrette, the transition to a modernized deposit-return system has begun with the launch of seven pilot projects. The projects will test various types of recovery equipment.

“Aware of the expectations of our customers and Quebecers, we have been working closely with the industry and government to ensure the successful modernization of the deposit-return system and achieve a higher recycling rate for glass,” said Marie-Hélène Lagacé, Vice-President, Public Affairs, Communications and Social Responsibility at the SAQ. “It’s a priority for us. For 30 years now, our teams have been working to develop options for adding value to the glass we sell. Today, the SAQ is proud to be part of the solution and to take an important step forward for the environment.”

An in-store pilot project

The SAQ’s involvement in the rollout of an expanded deposit-return system is currently taking the form of a pilot project at the SAQ Dépôt store in Terrebonne, which should make glass recovery easier and more efficient. This is a unique project where containers are fed in a reverse vending machine in the store entry, then gathered in a container outside the branch. In addition to wine and spirits bottles, the project will accept all types of beverage containers to be included in the expanded system, whether glass, plastic, aluminum or multilayer.

“We encourage not just our customers but also people living near the Terrebonne SAQ Dépôt or one of the other pilot projects to bring containers that are now or soon to be included in the deposit-return system.” Ms. Lagacé said. “Their participation is yet another step toward successfully implementing an expanded system. With this announcement from the minister, a major change in our recovery system is now under way.”
