‘’ A pretty and attractively layered nose is comprised by notes of essence of pear, citrus zest, sea breeze and a touch of wood. There is good richness to the bigger and richer medium weight flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel as well as much better depth and persistence. ‘’

‘’ In almost every vintage, it's worth the price difference to step up to Voge's Vieilles Vignes bottling. Certainly, the 2016 Cornas Vieilles Vignes is another huge success, with hints of cracked pepper and briars accenting red plums and then picking up licorice on the long, softly dusty finish. Full-bodied, concentrated and supple, it's approachable now yet looks sure to evolve gracefully for at least a decade. ‘’

  3. ‘’ The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a complex bouquet that is slightly more Musigny in personality than I expected. There is mainly dark fruit here, mixed with potpourri and incense and becoming more flamboyant as it aerates in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and quite compact in style because, as François Millet noted, these 2017s are beginning to close down. But there is certainly good density here, and an enticing tensile finish. ‘’

  4. ‘’ The 2017 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is complex and well defined on the nose, where touches of iodine and wild heather infuse the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly grainy texture; notes of black truffle and fresh fig complement a fruit profile that welcomes more red fruit toward the finish. Hints of white pepper and sage linger on the aftertaste. This is certainly beginning to close up in bottle, so allow a decade if you can for this Musigny to show what it is capable of. ‘’

‘’ Jean-Louis Chave had done some preblending of the 2017 Hermitage at the time of my visit, meaning several parcels had already been combined with others, so there were fewer components to taste. A sample that included some L'Ermite, Les Beaumes and Péléat was fragrant, loaded with peppery spice and came across as slightly open-knit (93 - 95). A second component, mostly Le Méal, was richer and riper-tasting, with lush fruit and hints of roasted meat (97 - 99). Finally, a sample Jean-Louis described as "more the core of the blend" (mainly Les Bessards) was simultaneously firm and generous, with notes of crushed stone, cassis and licorice. ‘’

‘’  A very pretty nose evidences plenty of floral character with a cool essence of red currant, cherry and soft wood nuances. There is good volume and punch to the attractively textured flavors that possess a rounded mouthfeel while offering solid depth and persistence where a touch of austerity arises. This is a quality Morey villages. ‘’

‘’ In the end, I'm unable to definitely say that the 2017 Hermitage Blanc is better than the stupendous 2016. Of course, I sampled it just three days after it was bottled, so I've appended the + to my rating, as there's a possibility the wine may have been affected by that process. It's gently toasty but dominated at this stage by forward melon and pineapple fruit. Full-bodied and incredibly rich yet balanced, it unfolds in waves of flavor and texture, lingering for what seems like minutes on the finish. Hit it soon to enjoy its youthful opulence, or put it aside for 10-12 years. ‘’

‘’ Delicately mentholated, with hints of nettle, white pepper, it’s naturally restrained. The power revealed by its texture, with an almost tannic aspect, will take time to reveal itself. Very crystalline, it offers a bright and sapid finish. A great white meant for cellaring. ‘’

‘’ This is the first wine to display any appreciable reduction and it's enough to overshadow the underlying fruit at present. There is excellent size, weight and mid-palate density to the overtly powerful big-bodied flavors that culminate in a dry, saline and solidly persistent finish. As is usually the case this is caressing and seductive yet entirely serious while offering fine aging potential. ‘’

‘’ Crushed stone, menthol and Asian five-spice powder notes accent blueberry fruit on the nose of the 2017 Saint Joseph Le Clos Florentin. Bottled just hours before I tasted it, it's full-bodied, plush and creamy in texture, finishing soft, elegant, long and complex. Enjoy it anytime over the next decade. ‘’

‘’ Just a wonderfully fun, joyous expression of the appellation, Chave's 2017 Saint Joseph was set to be bottled the day after my visit. It blends lots from Chalaix, Dardouille, Les Oliviers, Bachasson, and Le Clos Florentin into a medium to full-bodied wine loaded with cherries and delicate herbal nuances. Silky and crisp on the finish, it can be enjoyed now and anytime over the next 5-6 years. ‘’

    $59.75

‘’ The latest manifestation of new cuvée chez Joblot that debuted a few years ago is the 2018 Givry 1er Cru L'Empreinte, a blend of fruit from premiers crus Servoisine, Cellier Aux Moines, Marole and Bois Chevaux. The wine has turned out beautifully, wafting from the glass with an inviting nose of cherries, crushed cassis and plums mingled with hints of smoked meats and spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with an elegant chassis of powdery tannins, lively acids and a long finish. With better oak integration at this early stage than the Joblot wines of yesterday, it's seamless and harmonious. ‘’

‘’ The 2018 Givry 1er Cru Les Bois Chevaux is the raciest of Joblot's reds this year, perhaps due to its windy mesoclimate and limestone-rich soils. Offering up notes of spicy red cherries and candied peel, it's medium to full-bodied, fine-boned and precise in the context of this gourmand vintage. ‘’

‘’ The 2018 Givry 1er Cru Clos Du Cellier Aux Moines bursts with notes of spicy cherries and blackberries, followed by a medium to full-bodied palate that's broader, more concentrated and more powerful than the supple Servoisine, with a lavish core of dark, sappy fruit. There's more active calcium in the soil here and less clay. ‘’

‘’ A more elegant and slightly cooler nose combines notes of red cherry, plum, spice and a reasonably discreet hint of wood influence. Once again there is both good energy and mid-palate density to the medium-bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the ever-so-mildly rustic finale. This too offers good quality. ‘’
