Here are 10 wines to discover among those awarded at the 30th edition of Sélections Mondiales des Vins Canada. This major competition took place from October 11 to 15, 2023 at the Institut de tourisme et d'hôtellerie du Québec (ITHQ).   

  1. Grand Gold medal - Sélections Mondiales des Vins Canada 2023

    Present in Tuscany since 1141, the Ricasolis claim to be the oldest Italian winery. In addition to its ancestral know-how, the family benefits from the advice of renowned oenologist Carlo Ferrini. This classic cuvée comes from vineyards located on the five most representative terroirs of Brolio. Fermentation is done in stainless steel vats followed by an aging period of 21 months in barrels and large barrels, for a perfectly integrated woody touch. Brilliant with Beefsteak Fiorentina or pasta with Bolognese sauce.

    Initially established in La Rioja in 1889, the Martinez-Bujanda family business wanted to diversify its assets and take advantage of the creativity offered by new agricultural sites. This tasty Syrah cuvée from old vines in La Mancha certainly proves it! Delicious with grilled red meat and stews.

    In the northern region of Israel, in Upper Galilee, a wild and mountainous area of stretches the vineyards of Galil Mountain Winery. Established in 2000 and located in the kibbutz Yiron, the winery conducts its activities in perfect harmony with the surrounding nature. The Galil Alon 2020 is a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot aged for twelve months in French oak barrels. Full-bodied and oaky, it will appeal to lovers of beefy wines. Serve it with your best BBQ cooking recipes or a lamb tagine.

    Pleasant cuvée made entirely from the Muscadelle grape variety, originally from Bordeaux. Although the name evokes the Muscat family, they should not be confused. Its name, Ātanga, meaning beauty in Maori, one of New Zealand’s official languages, aptly evokesthe breathtaking landscapes of this paradisiacal region.

Formerly a Roman and Cathar land, the Bonfils Vineyards are established on the heights of this hill, surrounded by a grove of pine trees that serves as a storm barrier.     Leading producer in Emilia-Romagna, Umberto Cesari quickly became a favourite of Quebecers with his flagship cuvées Yemula, Moma and Liano. Featuring organically grown Pinot Grigio, this pleasantly light cuvée will be great as an aperitif and with seafood hors d’oeuvre and fresh cheeses.
