Barbera is the most planted black varietal in Northern Italy, and particularly in Piedmont next to Nebbiolo and Dolcetto. A rather intense acidity and discreet tannins are often associated to the grape, yielding easy-drink wines for the most part. Produced without the addition of sulphites, it reveals intense aromas of black fruits with accents of blueberry and Welch grape, as well as a touch of violet and candied licorice.
