Vignoble Saint-Thomas is one of the province’s hidden gems, located right in the heart of Lanaudière. This vineyard offers a true vine-to-glass experience, producing various types of wine that are just waiting to be discovered. I met with Éric Gagnon, winemaker and co-owner of the estate since 2013.

The mission: Making Quebec proud
You’ll find Vignoble Saint-Thomas amidst the beauty of nature. Blonde tobacco leaves were once cultivated in its sandy soil, which means the current vines have to dig deep to get their nutrients. Luckily, the land has an abundance left by what used to be the Champlain Sea. This is why their wine has such a distinctive flavour.
One of the vineyard’s main missions is to make Quebecers proud of their terroir. When I met Éric Gagnon, who’s been a producer here since 2013, I asked him what he does to achieve this objective. With complete sincerity, the gym teacher answered, “As an educator, I want to teach people to appreciate the unique grapes that are grown in Quebec. It’s a beautiful goal!”
wondered which wine I should taste if I could only pick one. He told me that each has its own character and asked for my preferences to guide his recommendations. There are many different products available—two whites, a rosé, two reds, two fortified wines and one sparkling. There’s plenty to enjoy for true wine connoisseurs, but more casual fans will appreciate the selection too. I tried their Côte d’Alban 2021, a versatile and very aromatic dry white wine with a nice minerality. Their Terratabac red wine was also a beauty—in fact, this crowd-pleaser won gold at Quebec’s Coupe des Nations competition in 2018.
Sit back. Taste. Repeat.
There are two patios and a lounge on the premises where families and friends can spend some quality time together. And here’s a bonus—it’s the first vineyard in Quebec to be equipped with automated machines that allow visitors to taste any wine they choose, whenever they want! When it’s warm, you’ll be drawn to take a stroll along the nature trail and learn all about winemaking. If you’re looking for something to nibble on, you can order platters with carefully selected local cheese and charcuterie infused with the vineyard’s wine. You can also get some dark chocolate that tastes simply divine with their products. I never knew about this particular pairing—I was blown away!
The secret ingredient: Love
During my visit to this special spot and its friendly folk, I tried to uncover the secret behind the vineyard’s success. I quickly realized that they have a passionate team that puts so much love into everything they do—and they take the time to do things right. Even though they produce 25,000 to 30,000 bottles per year, they’re still artisans and Éric continues to oversee every single vintage. This results in extraordinary teamwork—and fresh, tasty wine!
