Brandy, Cognac or Armagnac?

Here are a few examples of the many cocktails that can be made with brandy, a spirit made by distilling wine.

Published on October 14, 2020

While all Cognac and Armagnac is brandy, not all brandy is Cognac or Armagnac!

The difference is a question of region or AOC (appellation d’origine contrôlée, or “controlled designation of origin” in English). The word “brandy” comes from the Dutch word “brandewijn,” meaning “burnt wine.” Brandies are spirits made from the distillation of wine. Although they are produced throughout the world, the most celebrated examples originate from two AOCs in France. Cognac comes from the Charentes region, located north of Bordeaux, and Armagnac from Gascogne, south of Bordeaux. Of the other brandies made internationally, those from Spain and Portugal are particularly excellent examples.
