Vignoble Cortellino: Quebec pride with an Italian flair

On my way to Vignoble Cortellino in Saint-Urbain-Premier in the Montérégie region, I was expecting to be immersed in Italian tradition. Instead, I got a taste of the Quebec terroir done differently.

Published on July 3, 2024

Joseph Cortellino immigrated from Italy and settled in Quebec in the 1970s, around the time that René Lévesque came into power. The context greatly influenced his arrival—and the rest of his journey. He’s a passionate, politically engaged and articulate man who’s proud of his heritage, both Italian and Quebecois

Plan your trip with Vaolo.

"You know, in Italy, people make their wine at home. Everyone has a garden, tomatoes and grape vines, and the love of growing and winemaking is in our blood."

Joseph started making his own wine 40 years ago. His daughter Sophie would watch him as a little girl and later decided she wanted to get involved. Today, under her father’s watch, she and her husband are poised to take over the business, and their own children have fully embraced the winemaking culture.

“Let’s just say that my kids make great grape tasters! And my son, who’s very detail-oriented, enjoys placing the products in the store,” laughed Sophie.

It was back in 2008 that the members of the Cortellino family came together to establish the winery. They built Joseph and his wife’s home right on the property they’ve owned since 1987. It’s where the production room and store are found. Plus, there’s a magnificent terrace blooming with flowers where you can sip your wine, true to the warm and generous hospitality Italians are known for.

And you really do feel like you’re in Italy. The majestic yellow house, the flower garden, the huge, inviting terrace… But make no mistake—what you’re tasting is made with a healthy dose of Quebec pride.

"Our products are 100% Quebec-made. Everything you see is homegrown. That's what should be celebrated—the Quebec terroir."

- Joseph Cortellino, winemaker

It goes without saying that wines that are made locally using grapes grown in Quebec are different from the ones you’ll find in Italy. But the team strives to give them a certain roundness that’s reminiscent of Italian wines. And they’ve succeeded—both their white and their reds are excellent Quebec wines… with an Italian flair!

The popularity of local wines is relatively recent, and Joseph believes many of us are more accustomed to drinking wines from California or other regions that are often more full-bodied, woody or sweet. Therefore, you have to be open to flavours that are more distinctly Quebecois, being surprised and allowing winegrowers to bring you even closer to home and our roots with their products.

“When you come to our winery, forget what you know about wines from other regions. Forget sweet, woody, full-bodied… Try not to compare our wines with the ones you’re familiar with, and simply enjoy the moment.”

You have to keep an open mind and be ready to dive into the unknown, travel journal in hand, eager to fill it with tasty stories and rediscover the treasures of our terroir, but with a twist.

With his eloquence and his passion, Joseph really captured my imagination, and his words transported me to a place I’d never been before. Whether you’re a weekend adventurer or a seasoned explorer, Joseph and Sophie Cortellino will take you to faraway lands through their stories and their shared passion for winemaking.
