Like only a can can: 6 summery wine and food pairings

In the wake of its overwhelming success with craft beers and pre-mixed cocktails, cans are entering the world of wine and, to our sheer delight, this handy format is increasingly present on store shelves. Discover six canned wines and recipes as light as a summer breeze.

A long-time go-to for picnics, camping and outdoor shows, the can has been a favourite not only because it’s compact and lightweight, but also because it reduces waste and chills quickly.  (Goodbye, corkscrew and glasses that are often forgotten at home anyway!) What’s more, aluminum is an endlessly recyclable material that’s lighter than glass and therefore has a smaller carbon footprint. But most importantly, the handy can is now being used to package a wide range of popular wines. Here are six of them, along with food pairing suggestions for a cool, refreshing treat on hot summer days!

Aromatic and floral, this Chardonnay from the Australian backcountry goes beautifully with these smoked salmon crepes. These aren’t your average crepes—the roasted fennel, citrus and pineapple enhances the sweetness to complement the notes of exotic fruit and mild acidity of the wine. Perfect as an entrée or as a main course on a sunny day.

With its delicate aromas of apricots and white fruit, Confessions is California in a bottle. Plus, this refreshing Pinot Grigio is as light as its packaging! Even though its pronounced acidity and dryness pair well with a variety of dishes, we must confess that we’re head over heels for these little bites with guacamole and pesto-marinated bocconcini. They’re the ultimate combination of freshness and texture—and so easy to make! Ideal for picnics and casual cocktail parties, along with this delicious white wine in a can.

Domaine de Lavoie, a winery and cidery in Rougemont, offers a rosé in a can that evokes the abundance of fruits grown on the property. This wine made from Sainte-Croix grapes has smoky notes that are balanced out by its pronounced acidity, hints of raspberry and a generous body reminiscent of sugar candy. It’ll shine when enjoyed with these gourmet lobster canapés elevated by a splash of raspberry vinegar. Yet another reason to take advantage of lobster season and the warm sunny weather!

Want to breathe in the salt air of Portugal? One sip of this semi-dry white wine made from different indigenous Portuguese grape varieties and you’ll be transported there instantly. Inside this can is an impeccably balanced wine with grassy and citrus notes. To round out your gastronomical journey, opt for these sardines grilled on the barbecue and drizzled with fresh lemon vinaigrette. A summer pairing that’s rich in omega 3!

Le Pive is a light, dry organic rosé is an invitation to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. This PGI Sable de Camargue wine is made in this region of France, whose wild landscapes are dotted with salt marshes and pink flamingoes, under cerulean skies and the golden Mediterranean sun. What food does it pair well with? Tuna-and-olive patties, perfect for cocktails with unexpected guests (we bet you already have all the ingredients in your pantry). This canned rosé is sure to impress—it’s made with Syrah grapes, which provide notes of black olive, and it has a sharp acidity that will balance out the umami of the Parmesan in the patties.

While summer is a time for picnics and barbecues with friends, it’s also the season for spending some quality “me” time. What does that call for? A hammock or a chaise longue. A good novel or a stunning sunset. And a Sauvignon Blanc with a name that says it all. Savour the moment as well as the notes of green apple in this dry white from South Africa. And what could be better than a refreshing, tangy salad to go with it? Incorporating crisp iceberg lettuce, sun-ripened tomatoes and fresh mint, this grilled halloumi dish is a delicious way to cap off a date with yourself.
